Which startup programs can you safely disable on Windows?

Last reviewed 22 October 2026 · Windows 10 and 11

Open Task Manager, go to Startup apps and disable updaters, launchers and tray helpers you rarely use. Keep antivirus and audio, graphics and touchpad drivers. Disabling is reversible.

Where to turn things off

  1. Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, open Startup apps, sort by Startup impact, right-click an item and choose Disable.
  2. Settings. Settings, Apps, Startup has the same switches and also lists Microsoft Store apps.

Disabling does not uninstall anything. You can turn it back on the same way.

What is usually safe to turn off

What to leave on

Startup items Task Manager does not show

Some programs start through scheduled tasks instead of the Startup tab, and Microsoft Store apps use their own startup tasks. These are easy to miss. A complete check covers the registry Run keys, the two Startup folders, scheduled tasks that run at sign-in or boot, and Store app startup tasks.

How much will it help?

Each item mostly slows the first minute after you sign in, not day-to-day speed. Disable the high-impact items you do not need and judge the result over a few restarts. Do not expect miracles on a machine with an SSD and plenty of memory.

The same thing in Trimmel

Trimmel's Startup page lists all of the sources above in one place, with a plain-English note and a rough impact rating on each item. Its switches use the same flags Task Manager uses, so the change shows up there too and is fully reversible. Items it suggests turning off are tagged, and nothing is changed until you flip the switch.
